B. (aka Esther Bourdages) is an art historian, curator and sonic
explorer based in Montréal. She is the author of many articles
and critical commentaries on contermporary art. She holds a Masters
in Art History from the Université de Montréal. She
focusses on new forms of sculpture within an expanded field, as
multimedia, web art, sound art.
She plays portable turntable and manipulates vinyl records. She
pratices
improvisation, a field that affords her the liberty to create raw,
non-linear music, sometimes punctuated by sonic quotes, sometimes
by
abstract sounds: textures mostly produced by the disc upon which
she
performs alterations (sanding, cutting, etc.). She is part of the
turntabilist trio Vinyl Interventions [VI], with Carrie
Gates (Saskatoon) and Marinko
Jareb (St. Catherines). Since 2002, they have been developing
a workshop under the eponym name VI, in which EB gave a lecture
entitled The Echo of the Vinyl Record, Between the Sound and the
Visual, Between the Past and the Present. She has presented this
lecture on several occasions. She has a long collaboration with
Quartier
Éphemère, a visual art centre based in Montréal,
where she works on programming. She is interested in field recording,
specifically the music potential of sounds from the environment
- soundscape, sound ecology, etc. The sound as a vector of mobility
is one of her subject of reflexion. Following her travels in China,
she made her first release based on a field recording launch on
seasonal mp3 label from Brooklyn, NY. Since 2003, she has curated
a series of noise music events called "A Microphone in a Storm
of Noize". She continues to curate other series of concerts
dedicated to innovative and experimental music.
